Built in the Community: Why Community Matters in AI
If you're serving a community, you should understand the community.
One of the things we love about community financial institutions is that the word community actually means something.
Credit unions and community banks know the businesses they serve. They know the local employers. They know the industries that matter in their markets. In many cases, they have worked with the same families, businesses and organizations for decades.
That kind of understanding matters.
And we think the technology built for these institutions should have some understanding of their world too.
That idea is personal for me.
I grew up in a community where you knew your neighbors. You knew their stories. People did business with a handshake, and your reputation mattered because you were going to see those same people again.
There is something familiar about building Voyager in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, just outside Milwaukee.
This is a place that knows a thing or two about community.
Beer. Cheese. Bowling. Supper clubs. Getting together.
But the point isn't Wisconsin itself.
The point is what happens when you build close to the people you're trying to serve.
You stay closer to the work.
Start With Their Day
There is no shortage of conversation about AI.
There are models. Agents. Copilots. Automation. Research tools. New platforms. New capabilities. And seemingly a new option every week.
We know all of those things exist.
We use many of them.
We just think they exist to serve the user.
A lender should not have to understand every new AI term, decide which model to use, figure out how to orchestrate a collection of tools, or balance their business around how many tokens they might use.
They have a borrower waiting.
They have documents to review.
They have financials to understand.
They have policy to check.
They have questions that need answers.
And eventually, they have a credit decision to make.
That is the day we need to build for.
Start With the Work
For Financial Institutions, the number of AI possibilities can actually make the path forward harder.
The better starting point is the process itself.
Look at where people are waiting.
Look at where they are hunting for information, re-reading the same kinds of documents, checking work against policy, or depending on specialized knowledge to move something forward.
Look at the repetitive work that takes time away from the borrower.
Then start with one simple question:
What are you trying to accomplish?
Once you start there, AI becomes much easier to understand.
You are not trying to "adopt AI."
You are trying to improve a process.
Why We Call It an Approach
That philosophy even affects the language we use inside Voyager.
We use the word Approach.
An Approach starts with what the Financial Institution is trying to accomplish.
Review a borrower.
Analyze financials.
Check a lending policy.
Research an industry.
Understand what is missing.
Prepare work for credit review.
The lender describes the work.
Voyager understands the job and determines how to accomplish it.
Underneath, that may involve models, agents, research, automation, tools, or other AI capabilities.
But those are implementation details.
We know the AI words.
We just think they should exist underneath the experience, not become the experience.
The technology should manage the AI. The lender should manage the relationship.
Build Close to the Work
That is what community means to us.
It is not simply geography.
It is proximity to the people and institutions you are trying to serve.
A Financial Institution does not serve some abstract "user."
There is a borrower sitting across from a lender.
There is a business behind the financial statements.
There is a story behind the request.
And there is an institution with its own policies, experience, standards, and responsibilities.
The better you understand that context, the better you can serve them.
We think technology should work the same way.
That is why being close to the work matters.
It keeps us asking the right question:
What is the institution trying to accomplish?
Not:
What can we make AI do?
That difference changes how you build.
AI Should Make the Process Better
This is where we believe Financial Institutions have an enormous opportunity with AI.
Not AI for AI's sake.
Process improvement.
Take the work the institution already understands and make it better.
Reduce repetitive work surrounding the lender.
Bring institutional policy and knowledge into the process when it is needed.
Help people find answers faster.
Create consistency without removing judgment.
Make specialized knowledge available to more of the institution.
And create more capacity for the part that still matters most:
The relationship with the borrower.
That is what we mean when we talk about Precision AI.
It is not about asking a Financial Institution to choose from an endless menu of AI capabilities.
It is about understanding the job that needs to be done and applying the right capabilities precisely where they improve the process.
The complexity can live underneath.
The experience should remain familiar.
Community Starts With Understanding
Financial Institutions have been doing this for a long time.
They understand that serving someone well starts with understanding them.
What is the borrower trying to accomplish?
What is happening in their business?
What matters to them?
What can the institution actually do to help?
We think companies building technology for Financial Institutions should ask the same questions.
What is the institution trying to accomplish?
What does the lender's day actually look like?
Where can technology make that work better?
That is what building close to the community means to us.
Wauwatosa is our home.
Wisconsin is where we are putting down roots.
But the bigger idea is not geography.
It is staying close enough to the people you serve that you understand the work you are asking technology to improve.
Because if you are going to build technology for a community, you should understand what that community actually needs.
And sometimes the best place to start with AI is not with AI at all.
Start with the work.
